Editing Services

Adaline McMillan and I are proud to provide a wide variety of editing services for every stage of your novel. Whether you're looking for help developing your novel, or with spelling and grammar, we've got you covered!

In addition to our singular services, you can combine services for a lowered price, some of which are listed. If you'd like a combination of services that is not listed, that's not a problem! Go ahead and book your edit, detail which services you're interested in, and we will give you a rate for your custom package. If you'd like to pair a critique or proofread with a specific editing service, let us know! We're more than happy to accommodate your specific needs.

*All manuscripts should be double spaced with twelve point font, and a legible typeface such as Times New Roman.

*Each editing service requires a $20 down payment to cover the sample edit. The sample edit will be over the first 2000 words of your novel. The $20 advance payment is not an additional cost. It will be deducted from your total.

Developmental Edit

The developmental edit focuses on your story as a whole. While this is similar to a critique, a developmental edit provides a much deeper analysis of your novel and your story. 

  • What's Included: We will evaluate your novel as a whole along with providing a chapter by chapter break down. We will assess your plot, pacing, character arcs, genre compatibility, and age-appropriateness. In addition, we will carefully check for plot holes, continuity errors, inconsistency in character behavior, and areas of confusion.

  • Subject Matter: All subject matter is welcome.

  • Pricing: Developmental edits are $9 per 1000 words.

  • Packages: Developmental edit, line edit, and copy edit is $20 per 1000 words. This combination is perfect for authors who want to cover every step of the editing process. If you'd like to add another service or request a different combination, don't hesitate to specify upon booking.

 

Line Edit

The line edit is a very important step in the editing process. In this step, we will evaluate your writing style and your voice as a whole.

  • What's Included: The line edit focuses on improving your voice as a writer. We will look for poor sentence structure, repetitive phrasing, awkward dialogue, and cliché phrases. A line edit is not a check for grammar or spelling mistakes.

  • Subject Matter: All subject matter is welcome.

  • Pricing: Line edits are $8 per 1000 words.

  • Packages: A line edit plus a copy edit is $13 per 1000 words. This combination is great for authors who are just looking to improve their voice and ensure their grammar is up to industry standards.

Copy Edit

The copy edit is all about the grammar. Once you’re sure the style is just right, this is the next step. This step is not a proofread, as we will be making major and minor adjustments to your grammar.

  • What's included: In the copy edit, we will analyze and correct all of your grammar.

  • Subject Matter: All subject matter is welcome.

  • Pricing: Copy edits are $8 per 1000 words.

  • Packages: Full critique, line edit, and copy edit is $14 per 1000 words. This package is similar to one shown above, but it is a more affordable alternative. Though a critique is not as detailed as a developmental edit, this is a great alternative for authors who have a smaller budget.

  • We reserve the right to refuse service for any reason.

  • Completed services are non-refundable.

  • Please schedule in advance and allow at least thirty days turn-around time. Specific turn around times will vary. If you are booking a package, allow at least thirty days for each step of the editing process.

Terms and Conditions

  • Moving an Edit: If you want to move your edit to a different booking slot, please let us know via email. We will do our best to accommodate you, but please keep in mind that we may not be able to move your proofread to your desired booking slot.

  • Payment: All payments are to be made via PayPal. We require a down payment on all services, but if you need to make multiple payments we will work with you!

  • Communication: All communication will be done via email. No exceptions.

  • An editing service is not a guarantee of publication.
